Donation
Enables Children To Have Fun
The S'port For Kids Foundation recently
donated $15,000 to enable high-risk youth to participate
in sports activities. Alexander H. Yuan, Chairman, of
the Foundation said that sports provides children and
youth with a healthy and active lifestyle. Physical
activity contributes to self-esteem, builds character
and encourages teamwork. He said that their Board was
pleased to partner with the Children's Aid Foundation
to support so many children living in poverty. While
physical activity as a means of social intervention
has not been widely promoted in Canada, there is growing
evidence that sports programs have an impact on youth
at risk. In particular, children and youth living in
poverty, new immigrants and young girls appear to greatly
benefit from the opportunity. Sport participation is
no longer viewed as simply a means of keeping people
busy. It is recognized as a support for the development
of individuals, helping them gain a positive identity
and overcoming personal and social difficulties. Funds
from the S'port For Kids Foundation are being used to
enable children served by the Children's Aid Societies
to participate in Karate/ Tae Kwon Do, Hockey, Swimming,
Basketball, Skating, Track, Snowboarding and Gymnastics.
