First S'port Grants Give Kids a Sporting Chance
S'port for Kids Foundation Helps Kids To Stand
Tall and Proud
Toronto, May 4, 2000
The S'port for Kids
Foundation (SFK) announced today that it will award
S'port Grants to three non profit organizations in the
Greater Toronto Area (GTA) that champion amateur sports
programs for youth, six to 18 years of age. The S'port
Grants are the first to be presented by the Foundation.
The Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association
(CCYAA), Academy of Sport & Fitness Gymnastics and
Anduhyaun, a protected shelter for Native women and
children will receive the grants at S'ports Ball 2000,
a fund raising gala to be held May 5 at the Premiere
Ballroom and Convention Centre, Richmond Hill. The funds
will support integrated sport and leadership programs
that create opportunities for youth to achieve their
full potential and assist children who otherwise would
be denied the chance to participate in organized sports.
"Through team sports, young people learn to set
and achieve goals but some children can't join teams because
of a lack of funds," said Alex Yuan, founder
of the S'port for Kids Foundation. "Joining a
sports team becomes even more critical in communities
where youth violence and gang membership are on the rise."
Founded in 1997, the S'port for Kids Foundation
is a national charity dedicated to promoting the wholeness
of youth through sports. Yuan, President of A&L
Computer Software Ltd. established the Foundation to
raise awareness of the beneficial affects of amateur
sport and to assist organizations in providing opportunities
for young people to interact with healthy role models.
The S'port for Kids Foundation is managed
by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of business
and community leaders in the GTA. It relies exclusively
on special events and charitable contributions from
individuals, corporations, foundations and gifts in
kind to support organized sport. It allocates 100 percent
of its net proceeds to deserving youth.
Through S'port grants, the Foundation enhances the financial
resources available to individuals and teams to improve
the quality of life for less fortunate children and to
promote a greater Canadian presence in international sports.
It supports youth involved in new sports and organized
community sports programs that are at risk because of
government cutbacks.
