The
Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association
(CCYAA)
in North
York has provided community sports activities
for youth up to 18 and under, for more than
20 years. The S'port
Grant will supplement fund raising initiatives
undertaken by the Association and provide sufficient
funds for the Women's Basketball team, one of
the top five teams in Metro and National Championship
runners-up, to compete in the North American
Chinese Basketball Tournament in Toronto, May
25-28, 2000. Two of the team's lead players
are NBA, Two-Ball Championship winners.
The CCYAA Men's Basketball team currently
holds the Canadian National Championship title
and will also compete against the top 20 North
American teams in the Tournament.
In addition
to their athletic and academic accomplishments,
CCYAA team members participate in community
leadership programs and volunteer at charity
and fundraising events. These spirited, award-winning
players will partner with the Raptors Foundation/Nike
Canada Jam Van team on May 5 at S'ports Ball
2000 and challenge some of the 400 guests to
match their athletic skills.
Anduhyaun,
a protected shelter for Native women and children
in downtown Toronto, has created a safe play
area and sports program for youth under 12,
but requires sports equipment for the children.
The S'port
Grant will give healthy, energetic youth
a chance to play baseball, basketball and soccer
in a protected environment and provide creative
play equipment that promotes the normal growth
and development of pre-school children.
The Academy of Sport
& Fitness (ASF) Gymnastics, a
non profit gymnastics training centre in Richmond
Hill, offers a full range of recreation programs
for youth, six to 14 years and trains elite
athletes who compete in regional, national and
international championships. The training programs
focus on helping youth develop strong character,
healthy bodies and life skills. Senior athletes
at the Academy have represented Canada at World
Championships and the Olympic Games.
The
S'port
Grant will provide special equipment to
enable athletes to learn advanced skills and
achieve performance excellence without incurring
excessive stress or injury. It will also assist
gymnasts in reaching their full potential through
participation in competitive championships at
all levels. The high level athletes are training
to qualify for the National Team and to represent
Canada at the World Championship in 2004 and
Olympic Games in 2008.
The ASF gymnasts will entertain guests
at S'ports Ball 2000 with a dazzling display
of high-flying performance skills.
